EV Charger Home Installation

We discuss differences between EV chargers in more detail below, but to get a general idea, consider that EV chargers Level 1 can be directly put into a plug ( of course, the plug should be electrically compatible with the charger). EV chargers level 2 are primarily designed for houses, where you have access to the electrical panel. This is the best charger for a home installation. However, this costs more and needs to be done by a licensed electrician. Therefore, homeowners should refrain from installing this charger because there are electrical complications and hazards that only a licensed electrician can handle. Finally, EV Chargers Level 3 are extremely fast but primarily used in charging stations connected to a network.

Are you ready for the all new electric cars in Toronto and GTA? Well you should be!

When Carl Benz commercialized the first practical vehicle in 1886, which everyone could use (obviously if they could afford I!), he had choices to use steam, gasoline or electricity. The carbon Footprint was not in the picture at the time, and gasoline seemed the best option financially and practically.

Now in 2023, with many global Agreements such as Paris Accord, the world has realized that we cannot continue to use gasoline the way we used to. We will run out of it; let alone the pollution it creates and the planet it destroys.

Canada and many other western countries are a vanguard in changing how we look at cars. Many car manufacturers have decided not to produce gasoline cars until 2030, and many others are already making only electric vehicles, such as Tesla. As Canadians, many of us have older houses which are not designed to handle electric vehicle chargers. The good news is that the chargers are becoming faster and faster every day, and the batteries have more capacity. If you could only drive from Toronto to Kingston without charging your car, you could quickly get to Montreal and leave the car for a relatively short time to be charged again.

We at Dana Smart Homes not only install EV car chargers but also help you calculate how much you save by using Electric energy compared to other energy sources. We also provide solar energy if you are interested in charging the batteries. Of course, we can’t rely on solar energy all the time, but even if we have it for half of the year, it still saves much money.

The Cost to install EV charger at home (in Canada)

One of the reasons we provide a free inspection is to provide you with an exact quote. But to have a better view, let’s look and the components and the labor required to install the EV charger; you need the following:

  1. A 200AMP service with enough room to install another breaker, usually between 40 to 60 Amps. When we say there is enough room, we calculate what things can potentially be on simultaneously, add them together, and calculate %60 of them. For instance, your furnace and AC are rarely on together, so we can neglect those. But your elevator and sauna can be on at the same time. So when all the loads are added, we take %40 out and see if the new breaker will still be a good fit.
  2. Where do you want the charger installed with your panel? If your main panel is in the garage and your car is in the garage, we usually don’t need a lengthy wire. But the length of the wire is also essential in the cost,
  3. The charger you want: Many chargers are in the market. Some of them are for known brands such as Tesla. Some other ones are fast. Some are slower but need less power. The prices are different.
  4. Labor, small materials used, etc., is the last part of the cost.

A car charger installation, including the charger, will cost you about $1000 to CAD 2000.

What are the best EV chargers available in Canada?

This might be a more technical issue, and we usually discuss these during free inspection sessions. But if you are here, you want to know the technical part! So here you go: Let Tesla aside for a moment because of its different technology and standards as a pioneer in fast charging. For all Level 1 and Level 2 (120v and 240v), regardless of the wattage and amperage, the connector we use as a standard connector is called J-Plug, which is the same as SAE J1772. As Tesla has already made a level 2 connector for their Model S, they have a smaller, faster and more powerful connector than J1772. This connector is called Chamedo and needs the cars to have two plugs. More than 250 car chargers are currently eligible for government rebates in Canada. We can’t list all 250 or even more! chargers here, but depending on the make and model of your car we will suggest you a few models that are fast enough and compatible with your home electrical panel as well as your car. So don’t wait, will the form and get the FREE inspection today! In the meantime you can take a look at Forbes article on the best chargers.

Hire A Licensed Electrician

Every Level 2 Car Charger should be installed via correct wiring into your electrical panel. This is NOT a DIY project. You should always hire licensed electricians that are approved by ESA. The licensed electricians from Dana Smart Homes make sure that they use proper wiring, proper breakers and make correct calculation on how much current your device needs. Remember different car chargers work with different voltages and need different amperages’.
